09-22-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #95. Sewed all white banding on peach panties #1b, added 2-part ribbon drawstring. Finished PV/JL boxers, very funny all the extra zipper bits (lots of access!) plus a kind of crotch-cradle for whoever visits the boxers' inhabitant. Maybe tomorrow I will be able to re-engage with those paintings, they need it...
09-21-09
Monday
Dishsponge #94. Sewed pieces of #1b and pinned .25in wide wide band (purchased NY for some purpose now forgotten ca. 2003) to all unhemmed edges on inside. Cut pieces for a new style—call it approx. loin-cloth—then cut pattern. Sewed the "loin-cloth" panties, tried them on, revised them. Started working on PV/JL boxer shorts, JL dropped them off, freshly worn by PV, on waterpod.
09-18-09
Friday
Dishsponge #93. Did finishing work on "tap" panties (knit red & blue scraps at leg-holes, white waistband from GN pants at waist). Interesting how these non-stretchy underwear appear too large for me, unless I'm actually wearing them (include pictures when showing? show on dummies? to be decided.) Cut pattern (#1b) for variant on green/black (labeled #1) with additional side panel included. Cut out pieces from peach silk (lining of thrift store dress, purchased SC ca. 1998.)
09-17-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #92.
09-15-09
Tuesday
Took apart 2 of 2-ply clear plastic sheets (found in street, sicily, 2008), mounted them to wall, hung new black shelving on top. Painted skinny white SOFT on top row [to do: paint SOFT / SOFT / SOFT on next 3 rows, then paint each SOFT over, inexactly, 3x.] Painted other half of "Re- / De-" white, except about 20in x 20in area, as I ran out of paint. (Decided _not_ to use this for shelving text, will do the text directly on the wall.) Added side panels (transparent cloth, removed from "window" of G.o.C., 2004) to black-green panties, now I can get into them. Sewed dishsponge #90/NY3 for use tomorrow.
09-14-09
Monday
Tried to make the dk blue words make sense with the shelves for which they were intended. Failed in this, so I hung them in front of a kind of niche/indent next to the bathroom, blocking the fetsish ("Mutter") I'd hung there in July. Painted about half of the back a print from 1997 ("Re- / De-") white, will cut out the text, thin wide letters, AMP / LAE / PUL / CHRAE / REC / TAE ? Maybe. Once the paint's dry, I can hang the shelves on top and look. Started trying to correct the color on "REPLY" in kitchen thought painting, so far I've only made it worse. Started to make green/black panties (with matching mask) big enough to fit, so I could use them to peform. Sewed dishsponge #90/NY2 for use tomorrow.
09-13-09
Sunday
Painted v. dark blue PUL / CHRAE / REC / TAE on clear plastic with diamond-pattern string reinforcers (leftover from making new canopy for waterpod in August). Not sure about the color, also hard to correct as I don't want to use a 2nd paint color to paint over errors. Made new pattern for "tap" style panties, cut & sewed first examplar. Added material at sides (as the pattern is based on stretch fabric and I used this pink stuff from an old H&J blanket). Very cute but I need finish the edges, add drawstring, etc. on the smaller sewing machine in CA. Dropped off gravity racer at Pierogi. I titled it "extra" but maybe "mille feuille" is a better name. Fixed the hole in LRS t-shirt for LG. (Now I need to mail it to him so I can enter these things in the deaccessioned log.)Made a dishsponge, #89/NY1, in the evening, for use tomorrow. (The last time I returned from NY, AK wondered why I didn't make dishsponges there. And why not? It's mostly my own dishes, not the family's, even if more than one coffee cup.)
09-11-09
Friday
Gathered materials for NY. Sewed u.'s #5 shirt. Finished updating log at airport & on plane.
09-10-09
Thursday
Started updating log on website. Sewed dishsponge #88 by hand (just a few stiches at corners and to sew on hanging loop). Finished LG Logo Removal shirt.
09-09-09
Wednesday
Made new version of Logo Removal sign, each letter cut out and on own stand-up 2-sided section of POMI boxes (each about 5in x 8", letters 3" x 5"). 090909 Neutrality conference at Cal, GN et al. MMD came up for conference and dinner with me afterwards.
09-08-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #87. Finished last 3 shirts. Went to Cal to set up with sewing machine & stocks of shirts and materials. Determined that I needed a sign. Started sign on return to studio by assembling soup carton pieces and cutting out letters. Paint the back? Dinner with J&JE and friends.
09-07-09
Monday
Dishsponge #86. Bought 4 more t-shirts for Logo Removal, one for LG to make up late return of altered tanktop. Worked on texts for painting revisions.
09-05-09

Ironed clean Logo Removed shirts, AK came to studio with camera and helped me photograph them, front and back as necessary. Started tidying up mess made in process of Logo Removals, sorting and folding leftover fabrics. Swept floor and turned a table to change space.

09-01-09
Tuesday
First day of school. Dishsponge #82. Started on Logo Removal on t-shirts.
08-29-09
Saturday
Thread wrapped stack of painted POMI rectangles for gravity racer body. Added some odd bits to front and back, with lots more thread. Painted white all exposed red bits (from carton printing). Dipped wheels in white paint. Made container / garage from carpet scraps laced together. Sewed 20+ "labels" from mostly solid fabrics, with a few stripeys and plaids, for 090909 t-shirts. Bought about 20 t-shirts at thrift store for Logo Removals.
08-27-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #81. Cut all POMI boxes (from marinara sauce) into rectangles as determined by boxes folds. Also took apart thing I'd sewn from several POMI boxes last fall and cut up those boxes too. Made gravity-racer-sized rectangles by sewing together pairs of smaller rectangles (overlapped but not aligned). Cut all I could cut, sewed all pairs together, then used "GRIND" blue to paint side with POMI printing. (Don't need GRIND blue anymore as I will re-write and re-color this painting after 090909 and return from NY.)
08-25-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #80. Finished taking apart MMD bag, so many pieces, I need to count them. Magneted all pieces (some doubled and trebled up) to roll-up door: gorgeous. Mended an old shirt of u.'s. Worked on LG shirt (from Waterpod), becoming a proper drawing, I wonder how he'll react. Did a Logo Removal on a fleece jacket A's english friends left behind in NY studio, for u. Did Logo Removal (4 separate shapes) on a frail tote bag.
08-24-09

In studio, fiddling and fussing, trying to figure out what to work on. Started to take apart MMD Liz Claiborne turquoise bag.

08-02-09
Sunday
Made mask with deteriorated black couch fabric + green stuff, also matching knickers. Too small to wear. Waterpod, 2pm - 6pm, last day. Visits from A, a. and u; AN, NJ, PR; JG and DP.

07-29-09
Wednesday
Painted ACQUI- / ESCE & re-painted all interstitial space, slightly less orangey taxicab yellow. Had lunch with DK at Esquina. Painted REPLY, roughly, just so I could see it. Painted inside of "kids room" white. Did KS's sweater, MM's dress. Beautiful rain storm.
07-28-09
Tuesday

S dropped fedex of tube AK had sent (print ca 1997). Measured kitchen wall and cut the print into 3 pieces to fit the 2 spaces, sewing together 2 pieces to make the bigger top part. Painted top bright taxicab yellow, bottom light yellow—like a naples yellow. Apartment / studio stank.

07-27-09
Monday
Bought some screwdrivers to open machine, removed jammed thread. Then borrowed another one from S. Sewed a bunch of stuff. Hung some Berlin 2008 shelves.
07-26-09
Sunday
Did some work in studio, then went to Waterpod. Tiring, all that human interaction, but super fun. Dinner with JL & PV.
07-25-09
Saturday
Did some work in studio, then went to Waterpod. Then home to sleep.
07-24-09
Friday
On Waterpod. Visited by EGBW + sons, BH + son, KS who hung out until my shift was over and then we walked to the east side, 116th St., and taco-stand-hopped. Had some beer on Waterpod afterwards, then I slept on the Waterpod, not well. Nice to wake up on a boat early in the morning.
07-23-09
Thursday
Visited Waterpod, it was closed. Made banner for Alterations & Mending performance (on Waterpod), good practice on scary Juki.
07-20-09
Monday
To NY.
07-19-09
Sunday
Did some messing around on aluminum for brackets to hang the "screens" (for Kala, at the Barra window, downtown Berkeley). It's too weak, wants to bend, AK will re-inforce. Sewed together strapping so there are 2 very long pieces. I'm leaving quite a bit for AK to deal with.
07-18-09
Saturday
Dishsponge #79. Painted over bad choices in GRIND CUT etc. — had made ACCUMULATE AGGLOMERATE white with bubblegum pink filling the holes in the letters. Finished pre-touch-up draft. AK came in, finished table, then she cut aluminum for brackets (good job AK!).
07-17-09
Friday
Dishsponge #78. AK worked on table. Painted GRIND CUT etc. MMD came around 3.
07-16-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #77. Worked on GRIND CUT etc. Did some sewing, what though? Drove to Palo Alto to see MMD, go to BD opening (awesome work!), had dinner with MMD, we shot some video of me reading Portrait of the Artist hell sermon in the YMCA sauna. Ruined MMD's flip, I think.
07-15-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #76. Worked on GRIND CUT, etc.
07-14-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #75. Finished painting GRIND, then set aside some of its paint, used rest of lavender to mix new lavender, painted CUT; set aside some paint, mixed new lavender, painted COVER; set aside some paint, mixed lavender, painted BIND. Too many fumes in here, mild headache & am almost out of white.
07-13-09
Monday
Dishsponge #74. Finished silver-gray clean up. Maybe could tighten silver more but it's ok for now. Made tiger-hat based 2-sided mask out of old orange t of A's. Painted GR of GRIND, lavender—on the bluer side—will paint metallic gold around it. Why not? AK came in, started building on a work table.
07-12-09
Sunday
No dishsponge! Added tag to RC's skirt. Heavy "mending" on holey black sweater-scarf thing. Small pinstripe patch o either side hole in RC's navy sweater. Thinned, a bit, what remains of gray then painted over sharpie & cleaned up letters in bottom 2 rows of processes painting. Brought a laundry basket full of more fabrics from the basement. How slowly I'm using this stuff!
07-11-09
Saturday
Dishsponge # 73. Worked on bettering silver in processes list letters. Makied an off white, slightly greenish to start next ptg. (GRIND CUT / COVER BIND / FORM FOLD / ACCUMULATE / AGGLOMERATE.) Finished "use it all up" #4.
07-10-09
Friday
Dishsponge #72. Finishing touches on R's skirt. Worked on bag for GN —extra incentive to do my Logo Removal website. Painted DEVISE PROCESS again, better, and also painted IMPLEMENT DISPLAY.
07-09-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #71. Worked on RC skirt. Picked up new iron at Berkeley Vac: gorgeous! made in Germany!
07-08-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #70. Worked a bunch on RC skirt. Painted out DEVISE PROCESS. Decided to name any group of 4 objects: "one for each of us" This can work for the screens, the curtains, the uiau drawings.
07-07-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #69. Made pattern, from silver tarp scrap, for tiger hat (borrowed from GN/ML). Worked a tiny bit on "use it all up" #4. Pained [D] "EVISE PROCESS, DEVISE too spread out, PROCESS too cramped, will paint over with gray tomorrow, with silver letters Thursday.
07-06-09
Monday
Dishsponge #68. Started working on RC skirt. Painted "INVENTORY" & D of "DEVISE."
07-05-09
Sunday
Decided to (for now?) leave out detailed lists in the processes side & paint giant letters of just a few words of the main categories. Silver on gray. Enough?
07-04-09
Saturday
Dishsponge #67. Worked on a.'s #8 t-shirt. Worked on "use it all up" #4. Put some (hanger) wire in black/silver shelf but it's not enough to keep the shelf stiff.
07-03-09
Friday
Dishsponge #66. Started "use it all up" #4. Worked on text for wall paintings. AK straightened all my hangers & took apart easel I'd made for a. in SC 2002.
07-01-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #65. Conversed with various studio mates. Painted test for big silver / gray painting. Used a bit of red, decided red is too strong.
06-30-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #64. Finished "use it all up" #3, reminding self that a drawing can be ok even if I don't experience a feeling of adventure while making it: acceptance of routinized labor.
06-29-09
Monday
Dishsponge #63, the last one on this section of wall which I celebrated by using fancy, inappropriate fabrics: red satin and cream lining silk. An ineffective spong, but pretty. Started 3rd "use it all up" drawing. Cleaned up studio, rolling up some things that could be rolled up to make space to move around.
06-28-09
Sunday
Dishsponge #62. Worked on blue/white plaid fetish, added some red/white/blue plaid from similar shirt (from H&J ca. 2004) disassembled. Took an absurdly long time to work on this, to dubious ends. One of those objects I'm not so sure about, esp. as it strongly resembles a ratty snot rag -- it's clean though, I swear! -- which made me title it "gesundheit!" which I wrote on its tag. Finished 2nd "use it all up" drawing.
06-27-09
Saturday
Dishsponge #61. Bought 1 gallon white enamel and more sharpies. Finished Sc Ctr application. Worked a bit on a shelf.
06-26-09
Friday
Dishsponge #60. Started laying out bag for GN using leftover from his pants, orange canvas (A's chair) and red from backpack found in Berlin by my studio door 2008: GN can have it when he actually makes the website for Logo Removal, an incentive... Started 2nd "use it all up" drawing, went slower as I was distracted by all the busyness today in the studio building.
06-25-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #59. Worked on Sc Ctr proposal. Re-photographed tent model, dissassembled same, made new tent model with same transparent fabric plus orange canvas (from A's chair) for doors. Handsome!
06-24-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #58. Worked on lettering and wording for GRIND CUT / COVER BIND / FORM FOLD / ACCUMULATE AGGLOMERATE. Made pattern drawing using text "use it all up" on portable white board found in Magnolia studio when I moved in. There are 4 pieces of white board, I guess this means 4 drawings. Worked on Sc Ctr proposal.
06-23-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #57. Made bag for yoga mat from upholstery fabric purchased ~2004 for unrealized project plus scrap from couch reupholstering ca. 2002. A ridiculous way to spend time. Hung pieces of laminated print for next big painting. Made holes in sections so that it can be sewn together. Worked on Sc Ctr proposal.
06-22-09
Monday
Dishsponge #56. Finished brown cardigan. Worked on 2nd biggest shelf, attached all pieces, attached silver tarp for wall mount section. Unmade 4 old backpack straps to capture more black industrial fabric.
06-20-09
Saturday
Dishsponge #55. Worked on biggest shelf a little. Started to remake skirt from thrift store (KW, Fla.) french satin suit using skirt from 2nd remake of Oxford thrift dress plus brown/white stripe (purchased Paris, 1992?). Mended and re-fitted brown cardigan from H&J, can't show H as too crowded with changes. Studio visit from DvM, N & JvM.
06-19-09
Friday
Dishsponge #54. Stacks and piles: crowds and power. Another title: the next stain. Mended blue & white duvet cover (hand-me-down from CLD ca. 1996) using KSG linen shirt & J&H linen shirt & industrial felt. Worked on longest shelf. Sorted through RC's clothes for mending. (A & boys now gone for 5 weeks.)
06-12-09
Friday
Dishsponge #53. Started 4 new shelves in order to use up the last of black "industrial" material. Unless I use the white flannel sheet left behind in the Magnolia studio, this will be the last of the shelving for awhile.
06-11-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #52.
06-10-09
Wednesday
Studio visit from KK.
06-09-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #51.
06-08-09
Monday
Dishsponge #50. Visited T&C Mc's product recovery facility. (Will return to see sorting at some point.) Unpacked and tested rivet tool in several scraps of carpet. Mandrel doesn't break off. Otherwise, pieces get held together satisfactorily. Updated log (hadn't since mid-March).
06-06-09
Saturday
Visited T&C Mc to talk about their product recovery facility. Retrieved pants from G for further editing.
06-05-09
Friday
Dishsponge #49. Mended, poorly, child's quilt used to cover stained couch in kitchen. Sorted about 5 bags of piled up house hold trash; made clarified lists of store plastics. Sewing container, with NYTimes bag blue tarp, for small metal scraps. Discovered iron had died. Do I buy a good one or another cheap one?
06-04-09
Thursday
Finished H application during ET photoshoot at house.
06-03-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #48. Cut clear "tarp" into 4 33" x ~ 90" pieces; began ironing a new, thickening layer onto 1 section. Made planning sketches for shelves, considered what to used instead of predictable wood for uprights.
06-02-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #47. Dymprocess in lieu of / as well as dymproducts. All the sorting and organizing doesn't exactly show up in the "finished" products. Worked on H application. Ordered rivets and tool from Hanson so I can turn carpet into crates and/or shelving. Cleared up / sorted to make room on tall table for ironing clear plastic, which I've decide would make free-standing shelving.
06-01-09
Monday
Dishsponge #46. Work on H application. Lost momentum last week. (Did I have momentum?)
05-30-09
Friday
Dishsponge #45. Sewed red & white scraps (yardage agglomeration in Accumulations category) to on-going piece: r/w yardage. Moving incrementally. Sorted cloth scraps in 4' tall plastic bag, most put in there ca. 2006. This took a long time but now it's clearer what red & white scraps (mostly left from Red/White forms) I have to work with. Discussed revision of fire hazard wall with J.
05-29-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #44. Hung up panels for [GRIND CUT, etc.] then didn't continue b/c J says plywood wall, as built, is a fire hazard. Argh. Must be re-done. Time. Money.
05-28-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #43. A & P add 2' sections to make wall 10' high for 20' length. Worked on lists for paintings.
05-27-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #42. Finished turning u's brown cords into shorts. A & P build 8' wall using J-plywood.
05-26-09
Monday
Dishsponge #41. Mixed gray paint (using 2 reds, 3 blues, white) & painted back of "Objects" to-do list. Wow!
05-21-09
Friday
Dishsponge #40. Photographed "Objects" to-do list, flipped it to back side, with difficulty since corners are 2-layers and make it impossible to roll. Re-inforced seams with brown packing tape. I'm looking at this pastiche of 10 yr. old prints and feeling resistance to painting over it. Did finishing work on GN pants -- belt loops, buttons, cleaned up raw edges.
05-20-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #39. Really worked on GN pants.
05-19-09
Wednesday
Worked on GN pants.
05-18-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #38. Met with P & A to talk about space/work exchange. Finished lt. blue on smaller letters, cleaned up a bit with whtie. Patched 1 of 2 knees on a's dk. blue cords; worked on u's brown cords' conversion to shorts. Made lovely red-and-cream transparent bag for pencil shavings (so I could clean my desk!)
05-17-09
Monday
Dishsponge #37. Lighter blue paint on 2/3 smaller letters on "Objects" to-do list, plus dark red on "continuing & planned." Worked on GN pants a bit.
05-16-09
Saturday
Very busy, running around 2 boroughs, talking to people.
05-15-09

Rearranged furniture in apartment. Cleaned seriously.
05-13-09

Painted gray coat on outside of drywall partition in apartment.
05-12-09

Friday
Dishsponge #36. Continued painting. Didn't finish sub-categories, but they're all laid out.
05-07-09

05-06-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #34. Started painting new lettering.
05-05-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #33. Painted over entire surface of "Objects" to-do list with white paint. Tiring but defintiely the right move.
05-04-09
Monday
Dishsponge #32. Sent in dd application. Laid out wall organizer of white inked cord (from G.o.C. preparations, 2003) and stretch denim.
05-01-09
Friday
Dishsponge #31. Worked on JL's writing for a while. Worked on to-do list painting with increasing sense of frustration and futility.
04-30-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #30. Work on to-do list painting, working idiotically painting in and around the letters. Email from P & A reminding about studio.
04-29-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #29. Painted all small letters, whted some out at top where the slant was too much, even for my loose approach. Re-painted "O" objects in ligher blue, not sure why so may have to change.
04-28-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #28. Finished big letters in paint, painted smaller letters in sub-categories of "outfits." Bought more paint, brushes.
04-27-09
Monday
Dishsponge #27. Worked on sharpie layer of to-do list, then mixed a barely teal blue and painted first three letters of each main category (reads: OUT, ACC, DISP (ok, 4), SHE, CON). Shelves is first, I need a taller ladder to reach it.
04-24-09
Friday
Dishsponge #26. Worked on to-do list, laid out all major categories.
04-23-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #25. Did several layouts for to-do lists in sketchbook. Started on panels on wall using sharpie, pale colors first then darker as I made changes.
04-22-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #24. Prepared and hung four panels (3' x 9' each) for to-do list.
04-21-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #23. Re-arranged studio to make wallspace avail. to hang dishsponges, giving them room to expand. Re-organized plastics, the better to see them, keep track of what I haven't figured out how to deal with. Hung One for Each of Us curtains to block "gallery" under stairs. Sewed together strips of tarp (after removing hundreds of "decorative" staples) left over from KK projects.
04-20-09
Monday
Dishsponge #22. Worked on application for Ex. Worked on costume: made outer layer for eye mask, marked spot for back-of-head eye-holes.
04-19-09
Sunday
Wrote 2 letters, volume 1.
04-15-09
Wednesday
Ironed 26 plastic bags, handles and bottom seams trimmed off, over bucket form. Hardly even a start of a start. Too short and much, much too thin. 200 bags, perhaps?
04-13-09
Monday
Borrowed iron from J&H tenants.
04-12-09
Sunday
Filled canvas zippered bucket form with sand at beach.
04-06-09
Monday
Dishsponge #21. Sewed together felt bucket template pieces. Cut canvas for interior part of template-form--to be filled with sand. Put away things I'd picked up from KK (rug pieces; pits of sewed, painted, scalloped clear plastic; similar plastic stuffed with hair; harder plastic bits; 3x aluminum stands from 1999.
04-03-09
Friday
Dishsponge #20. Buzzing head. Wrote a to-do list with sharpies on the 3 enwhitened map panels. Just handwriting, insufficient. Painted "make bucket," too cute. Made pattern on printed-map stock then cut first bucket form from felt. Started taking apart brown velvet pants (from MC by way of JL, same as navy velvet from N last year).
04-02-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #19 (looks too much like a menstrual pad). Finished cutting last 2 forms drawings: vocabulary. One I wonder if I'll get around to using. They do seem like a resource for making repeated patterns, I didn't use many of them in 2005-6 for this purpose, only one or two. Put up 3 white-painted map pieces as a single sheet. Embroidered 3/4 of "Y" in STAY.
04-01-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #18. Enwhitened larger scraps (~ 2' x 4') old ca. 1999 map prints to start wall-mounted large-scale to-do lists. Cut apart 4 more forms drawings. Edited many individual forms on cards.
03-31-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #17. Finished slip dress pattern, made sample using A & a's old t-shirts, cut apart, used gray and lavender velvet to cover over logo'ed parts. Cut another forms drawing into cards, worked on a few. Put 2 bad ones in paper recycling.
03-27-09
Friday
Dishsponge #15. Too floppy. Worked on 2 add'l sets of forms pages. Some pages contain almost all excellent forms, others have mostly mediocre ones. Cut most of a draft for a pattern for a slipdress. Full length version to be used in costume with double forms hat (see 3-11-09).
03-26-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #14. "Finished" working on screens drawings, hung it on wall. Cut apart forms drawing (dated 030205) into parts, worked on some individual forms (with ink, sharpie and cutouts). Ruined one.
03-25-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #13. Continued work on 2005 screens drawing. Worked on proposal for G. Emailed an image to E.
03-24-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #12. Ironed another 3' x 10' of clear plastic bags onto larger piece (tedious). Almost done. (The larger clear crinkly bags--like from tortilla chips--are good as "windows" in cloth or other bags.) Fixed a.'s brown cords' pocket where he'd stored some tar. Cleaned up mess of plastics left from ironing. Worked on 2005 screen panels drawing using ink and sharpie and cutting out shapes.
03-23-09
Monday
No information available for this date.
03-19-09
Thursday
Attempted to iron crinkly wrapper plastic film--I think I need a press for these. Cut about a cubic foot of .5" x .2" pieces of this stuff: very festive, very laborious (note to self: hire assistants or buy a shredder or both). Ironed some tofu packages-- would work better with more heat and, again, a press.
03-18-09
Wednesday
Finished painting red shapes on 1st, dark blue, print of .5" --> 1" ply print. Have no use for this. [Ed. -- Will paint over, see to-do lists, April 27th or thereabouts.]
03-17-09
Tuesday
Dishsponge #9. Ideas: skinny bracelets embroidered with "I'm in No Hurry." Tarps ironed from bags with patterns of other bags (stripes, diamond to mimic dishsponges on wall, etc.) Ironed additional ~4' – 10' onto clear plastic tarp. Sorted rest of garbage, videotaped almost 2 hours worth of sorting. (Needs editing & to be sped up.) Edited hairband more. Shot photos of me in IAAE (Immodest) Dress.
03-16-09
Monday
Dishsponge #8. Altered hairband by adding gray velvet (old boys' pants) and burgandy-white stripe knit (APC t): made it too tight. Sorted under self-video surveillance several bags misc. household, mostly kitchen, plastics. (Will post categories at future date.)
03-15-09
Sunday
Dropped bag of garbage at studio. Videoed sorting of garbage. Sewed dishsponge #7 but didn't use it. (Cheating!)
03-13-09
Friday
Dishsponge #6. Hemmed IAAE [Immodest] Dress. Sewed together several good pieces of fabric I'd cut from clothing. Stacked in not-quite-folded pile. What good is _this_? It has the air of idiotic textile art. Another wrong path? Cut logos from "Yelp" t-shirt (K gave to me ca. 2006) & inset pieces of double-knit patterned poly removed from Santa Cruz thrift store shirt (purchased ca. 1999); replaced t-shirt tag with one made from striped fabric.
03-12-09
Thursday
Dishsponge #5. Finished FH / OJ sweater. Maybe too pretty? Finished sewing "I am Always Embarassed" [ed. note: renamed Immodest Dress, June 2009] dress, it fits!
03-11-09
Wednesday
Dishsponge #4. Edited puppet & sewed on a few pieces that I'd pinned on, what, last November? Added form-hat #2 (2002) to form-hat #3 (2002) then added object made of curvey hourglass cream denim shapes: a beginning of something, maybe another puppet? Started editing Frank Ham / Open Joker sweater.
03-10-09
Tuesday
Start chart to keep track of sleep a& other domestic issues. Sewed dishsponge #3. Painted some red-orange onto dark blue of .5" --> 1" plywoood print, approx. 1/3 of shapes.
03-06-09
Friday
Made a headband. Made dishsponge #2, added to wall next to dishsponge #1. Finally sewed red transparent cloth onto "MANAGEMENT" (The Management and Care of Excess). Ironed / fused 16 NYTimes bags; used a small piece to make chinese-take-out-carton -- nice try but no cigar. Finished cutting pieces for .5" --> 1" plywood table, then began trimming pieces that don't fit.
03-05-09
Thursday
Made a "dishsponge" from old toweling, with a loop to hang it up. Washed coffee cup then hung "sponge" on wall. A new daily practice, single use hand-made "dishsponge". Cut about 25 of 35 pieces for ½" to 1" plywood tabletop. Did some more work on blue-white plaid panel until suddenly I folded it twice, sewed it down in a couple of spots and hung it in the closet gallery.
03-04-09
Wednesday
Undid then re-did divider for current daily bag. Added buttonholes to attach panel that holds socket wrenches + bike light. Added buttons to the panel. Gathered up blue-white plaid pieces I'd made as a version for N's tent model, sewed them together with shiney red ribbon + other red stuff between them, trying to get them all into one square piece. Kept working on it until it became too much at which point I stopped. Embroidered "leave" in script on a panel to be the reverse of "enter" sewn for GoC (2004). Then sewed these panels together with an inch thick band between them, put foam (extra from The Conversation 2007) and hung in closet gallery doorway. Pretty good but not quite enough somehow. Also the fabric doesn't fit tightly enough over the foam.
03-03-09
Tuesday
Brought sewing machine plus 2 bas misc. stuff to studio. Sewed 2 pieces of "misprinted" canvas print. Attached 2 panels of dark-blue-on-map print then numbered and cut out the negative spaces. Numbered the negative spaces on the plywood. At last minute added divider to current daily bag, in a hurry, did it very badly, not time to edit. Left early to see Jacques Bel in SF.
03-02-09
Monday
Took 1 print on 2 3‘ x 7‘ panels of multi-color digitally printed map (from AiaHNGL 1999) with dark blue, another print on another 2 panels with light blue enamel paint. Then 2 prints on canvas (one on 2 pieces since I mislaid the fabric on the plywood—another excuse to sew something, as if I needed one) that look the best. One I can use as a tablecloth once edges are evened out and trimmed. (Canvas overstock from the Conversation.)
02-28-09
Saturday
Reworked serged pants from A's old Ts. Not especially lovely but fit ok. Used some of the 2006(?) printed fabric to make an odd little pillowcase and then a little pillow to go in it. Stuffed this with fabric scraps: heavy and lumpy. (A shredder might have obviated this problem.)
02-27-09
Friday
Re-cut pattern for Oxford dress after finally ironing it. Re-cut and sewed bodice and collar (from pieces D cut badly) using transparent fabric. This version is titled "I Am Always Embarassed."
02-26-09
Thursday
Sewed more red & white scraps together: why am I doing this? Took partial prints from ½" to 1" ply, on on a piece of laminated paper I found in the studio from previous tenant, two on scraps of cloth (extra bits from digital printing of FStF and TToM). Stripped some wire, worked a very little bit on basket. Short day, left early to help A prep house for post-BCC event.
02-25-09
Wednesday
Finally finished glueing + screwing scrap plywood to large piece. Inked edges of all scrap pieces, photographed. Re-inked edges, darker blue, photographed. Wrote program for additional steps for ½" to 1" ply tabletop, some of which have been accomplished. Shrunk 8 blueberry boxes (#6) (16 pieces), 4 pieces from ice-cream cones packages—punched holes in only 2—1 piece from rice crackers. Is this really all I did today?
02-24-09
Tuesday
Nothing.
02-22-09
Sunday
Hand-mended, egregiously, 3 holes in N's sweater. Tried to sew on Juki at S's, but threaded it wrong then broke the other needle. Stole a single glove from S, need to confess.
02-17-09
Tuesday
(No school but boys were busy so I got something done anyway.) Shortened M"L"S beige wool skirt + lining, added red-orange thread stripes at bottom edge + side seams then re-attached an inch or so at the bottom as I'd made it too short. Took FH shrunk navy pullover sweater, fitted it at side-seams, added back seam for better fit; used brown zipper (JD handmedown used in Berlin sweater) to make into a cardigan; added burgundy hood (removed from RTG's WFCR sweatshirt: hideous); added small rectangles of cloud material at zipper ends; added cloud material on either side of back seam (like skinny roads); added "M" from WFCR _FM_ as inside label; put a oversewn patch to replace PRL logo
02-16-09
Monday
MMD over (with C + F). Re-patched her long, olive T with a piece from old T of a's (removed rose embroidered patch); put a patch on a small hole of a dressy jacket then added some trim to jacket from (trim from something red, what exactly I no longer remember), some of this trim I'd made to hang a thread basket, it had a piece of the stripey stuff on it, extra decorative; narrowed some yellow cord pants for her; turned an ill-fitting camisole into a well-fitting nightgown (took 2 tries) by adding pieces from old T of A's.
02-14-09
Saturday
Stopped by studio to drop off long, high table & more felt, etc. Stolen work time: removed screws from ply scraps, glued and screwed next batch. Will finish week-after-next when back from NY.
02-13-09
Friday
Removed screws from plywood sheet; shifted some of the smaller pieces around before setting them: mindful that this will be a print; glued and screwed 2nd round. Wove rest of exposed piece brown-covered wire into basket. Pulled white casing off final piece twinned blue- / brown-covered wires. Wove all blue and most of brown into basket. Pulled white casing off another piece of cable, exposed 4 very thin strands, white, yellow, brown, green.
02-12-09
Thursday
Started gluing and screwing (in lieu of clamping) 1/2" pieces ply scraps to 48" x 84" sheet 1/2" plywood. Ran out of screws, so will continue when these can be removed. Wove brown-covered wire (that had been twinned with blue in cable donated by SM last year) into basket. A tall skinny basket or a fat wide basket?
02-11-09
Wednesday
Finished current fabrics' inventory, will post as pdfs on website, for now. Need to hire someone to make them interactive. Later.
02-10-09
Tuesday
Continued work on fabrics' inventory. Updated this log, big big backlog. Would like to include pop-up images for some of information mentioned herein. Later.
02-09-09
Monday
Photographed fabrics on shelf, loaded on computer, started recording and laying out data on fabrics' provenances. Much more to go! Then the plastics shelves!
02-06-09
Friday
Took apart leather + fleece glove (found in street NYC over holidays, made in China). 9 pieces of leather, plus a bit of elastic. Left 2-part pieces that go b/w fingers tother (V-shaped). Took apart _u_'s worn out red Tsukihoshi sneakers (he wore them from spring 2007 until fall 2008!). Soles for re-grind. Uppers for? Partially took apart "evening purse," added button, re-folded, hung in Closet Gallery. Did more tidying, sorting, etc. of fabrics and other stuff.
02-05-09
Thursday
Talked to NL on phone re: WNWN. No immediate answers of course but she's got a couple of helpful sources, if only she can find time/energy. One strategy in the studio, to use up this stuff, is aggregation, attaching like things together (like all the One for Each of Us curtains from Collision #1, or use them for my own tent?) Trimmed ½" parts off plywood left from S.D. (2007) to use to make 1" plywood for work table. When ½" scraps are glued down, will make print to a) record scrap ply assemblage, b) re-purpose old laminated digital prints, c) have templates to cut precise interior pieces. Stacked 1" pieces to see how they look re-organized. Sorted and placed harder plastics on shelves. Tied string and laces (from 2006 to present) on string attached to shelf so I can see what I have.
02-04-09
Wednesday
Worked on sorting materials left in basement from move to studio, setting aside more to transport here. Mtg. at 1pm with ES to talk about WNWN, not particularly fruitful.
02-03-09
Tuesday
Sorted. Folded. Re-arranged. What a lot of garbage I've managed to save. It was easier when I allowed myself to throw it all away. Started gallery under stairs to display, discreetly, odd things I've made. (Later: re-paint, install a light.)
01-31-09 / 02-01-09
Saturday, Sunday
Each day came to studio with A + boys in both cars with loads of stuff.
01-30-09
Friday
_a_ home sick. Worked on Illustrator re-design of tent: first "pumpkin" then "onion," better! Need to transfer model from desk (stapled down) to a board so I can bring it to the studio.
01-29-09
Thursday
Finished the five plaid-shirt panels for NL tent model. Tedious. Put them on the structural uprights, this looks terrible! Took them off and began re-formulating tent, now it's pumpkin shaped! Better. Will it work?
01-28-09
Wednesday
Short work day. Finally wrote email to VB re: WNWN. We'll see what, if anything, that engenders. Worked on editing NL's text, more work to be done there.
01-27-09
Tuesday
Began sawing small blue bookshelf ($5 at yard sale, 2004) but need skinny elec. saw to finish. Worked on The Management and Care of Excess, finished "Excess" & "Care," perhaps will make extra letters to flip over "EX" (AB-, AC-, SUC-, RE-); made more structural members for tent model; started using plaid shirts (gift (H&)J, made in India, worn and worn out) for tent panels. Laborious to turn one shirt into five fairly rectangular panels. Loaded car with first load for studio.
01-26-09
Monday
Today + yesterday (stolen free hours...) made partial slip cover for RTG / FStF chair, after removing head (so weird, undoing an effigy), to cover RTG's chest + legs, used off-white denim left from G.O.C., black ceramic cloth (from (H&)J and for pockets on chair back, black canvas from GN's pants in the repair pile; shortened one green feather pillow (found with NL, Berlin 2008) and made matching cover. For new studio.
01-12-16-09
01-20-23-09

Two weeks loosely accounted for;
kids ≠ no school 01-19
— worked on Nat's tent model; — tweaked unfinished 1st square-brimmed sunhat (made with H's lousy dropcloth fabric); — worked on Re-Gift Scarf, adding fringe M"L"S put on u's t (2008) and trans. fabric from sewn plaid (unused for G.o.C. 2003-4) with red + white ribbon; — began re-doing main words on The Management and Care of Excess, now all caps, machine sewed plus overlay of transparent red silk (lining of dress gift (H&)J 2005); — worked on d's e website more; — worked on A's website. Next time maybe hire someone! — took 5 curved wires (left from starting tent model), wire twisted together, made felt cover: a coat hook, alas too cute for my purposes.
01-10-11-09
Saturday, Sunday
Picked apart addition to Re-Gift Scarf to make it lie flatter. In SF noticed high-quality cotton shirt in street: still so much extra around! Left it there. Added Berlin to log page.
01-08-09
Thursday
Added cuffs (from worn elec. blue feetie pjs, C in SC got at Sears 2002) to 1st pair fleece gloves. Made scrap bin for tiny scraps from old jeans (MD + A's ruined by storage in SC wet garage) with loops then hung it on cart. Did this to clean up floor to get to rug scraps. Added br/wh stripe piece to Re-Gift Scarf, lies badly. Used serger to add to scrap white t pieceing, small sloppy boneless Lee Bontecue? then added it as "dickie" to S.o.A.B. jacket. Hemmed "scale-painted" piece left from I.A.T. and another piece cut off, attached. What to do with it? Everything I'm making now is so small.
01-07-09
Wednesday
Unstitched, sewed together all pieces orange Sunbrella canvas removed from A's defunct metal tube chair; this made a cloth ~ 24" x 36", with bits of white canvas (left from 1st version RTG FStF chair (2005)) to fill in blank spots. Don't know what this is for, consolidated scraps... Repaired ripped handle, re-inforced other 3 on 2007 Labyrinth tote.
01-06-09
Tuesday
Cut pieces for 2 new gloves (hand-print pattern), using: body: ATN bday present scarf (made by VB); palm, middle fingers: br/wh stripe yardage (see 06-11-13-08). Filled in one hole in [now called] Re-Gift Scarf with BW pajamas, purchased for A's birthday ca. 1998. Removed trim, brim wire from green felt hat.
12-29-08
Monday
S decides to buy 2nd-hand Juki, so now I have a machine to use in NY. Finished deconstructing size 18mo Osh-Kosh overalls (they were usable/unhandmedownable due to weak crotch snaps).
12-28-08
Sunday
Tried to get S's other sewing machine (Pfaff 1222E) to work. Needs complete overhaul.
12-25-08
Wednesday
Tried to get S's sewing machine (Brother 1215?) going; missing not only bobbins but bobbin case. Worked on website.
12-21-23-08
Sat, Sun, Mon
Hand sewed repairs on A's long gray scarf (last year's birthday present). Unsatisfactory, better with machine. Made a small amount of progress on "The Care and Management of Excess," but will it be finished by 2009?
12-16-08
Tuesday
Made Hat Model (4b or 5?) with brown wool exterior (sweater purchased in Berlin thrift store, 2007, shrunk, re-constructed for use previous winter, with old hot pink shrunk sweater—took this apart last week as too ugly to wear) and turquoise fleece (purchased in Paris, 2002) interior; for S.
12-15-08
Monday
Cut & sewed practice pants (slated for sleepwear) from new exercise pattern, used old crib sheet after removing elastic. Needs waistband. Took unused, not cheap, long-sleeve t-shirt bought for A ca. 2006 and re-cut and serged to fit me. Added some cream denim (trimmed from G.o.C.) to gray velvet hat.
12-12-08
Friday
Made left glove with throat of delicate navy silk (CK jacket, purchased at discount, LA ca. 1999) and 2 different pale pinks for palms (t-shirt from ATN show, 2003?); finger backs: I cut these from the re-worked "shabby maternity t-shirt purchased LA 2001" [See 12-08-08] This made the re-worked shirt a little stranger, since there were three holes for the finger backs then three egregious patches for the holes, plus a couple of mends where I'd otherwise made mistakes. Cut pattern for exercise pants. Started making gray velvet sunhat, not going so well—maybe because gloves are the focus of the moment?
12-11-08
Thursday
Cleaned up a little because it was getting hard to see what was in stock. Took photos of stocked plastics + fabrics. Made 2nd functional fleece glove with red stem and back, light blue palm + 2 middle finger backs. Very graphic.
12-09-08
Tuesday
Made functional left glove with red fleece "throat", light blue fleece palm + backs of 2 middle fingers.
12-08-08
Monday
Re-cut uncomfortable "Gashi Gashi" t-shirt (purchased, Oxford, 2003) to convert to yoga top. Also took shabby maternity shirt (purchased LA, 2001) and converted it to slim-fit sleepwear. Somehow, sadly, felt both these activities were not a productive use of my time. Took apart small green furry frog (gift to .a. from JL, 2001) as one eye had come off and was no longer useful as toy (did not tell .u. however as he is attached to snuggly toys). Thought about N's tent.
12-06-08
Saturday
Packaged and label JFH computer case using clear plastic bag from bread (inside out so printing less obtrusive). Made hang tag using scraps from unusable Truck prints (ca. 2005). Made additional hang tags for future products. Next batch: on thicker paper made from laminating thinner sheets.
12-04-08
Thursday
Unpinned transparent hat from eye-patch + other hat. As it was missing a panel, I finished it. It is quite handsome if not worn: This seems like a good criteria. Took yellow knit lining from pokey hat made from old sweater and put it in pokey hat made from red fleece. Added blue fleece knob on top (red + blue fleece leftover from unfinished winter coat project, purchased in Paris, 2003); gave hat to .a. as it is quite functional.
12-03-08
Wednesday
Trimmed & mulled over No hurry choker. Cut out and added transparent fabric to 2nd hole on eye-mask. Cut pattern for Hat 5, a variation of Hat 4. Made exacting version of Hat 5 using transparent fabric (leftover from plaid curtain not used in G.O.C., 2004), each piece doubled. Unfortunately, looks like a religious hat of some sort, not like a freakishly flimsy version of a winter hat. (Maybe if I do a coat + boots to match?) It's currently pinned on top of a sample of Hat 4 and the eye-patch mask. This is one of those things that will have to go.
12-02-08
Tuesday
Made new pattern* based on surfing glove, then made right glove. Used turquoise fleece pjs (outgrown by a + u) for outer, navy / orange fleece sweater (was A's, then R's) for "handprint" part. Cut pieces for 2nd glove. Need to make new 1st glove. Made 2nd version of pattern, cut & pinned 1st glove. Turned sleeping mask into mask, added orange fleece to back, cut one eye hole and attached transparent fabric thereon. (*Started using stocked laminated large digital prints for pattern pieces. For easy access, hung print roll under sewing table.)
12-01-08
Monday
Did a little desk business / paperwork. Worked on website. (.a. came home from school early, sick or maybe just tired, so I couldn't do product work.)
11-29-08
Saturday
Did a little desk business / paperwork.
11-19-08
Worked on a stocking cap sample using thick gray sweater from 1990 worn out by me, A, and moths and old painty yellow turtleneck of .a.'s. Didn't attach yellow to gray. Also worked on talk.
11-16-08
Sunday
Sneaked to basement to work. Further modified State of Am. Business Jacket; reworked JFH computer case. Later, worked on website.
11-14-08
Saturday
Made 1 gray left glove to complete set (sewed 2/3 wrong, had to un-pick and re-sew: almost made a fourth right). Completely de-constructed a's ragged navy cords; used part of the waistband therefrom to start (almost finish) a new hair band (also with gray from H/J trousers + a bit of the tote-stripey fabric; completely de-constructed Oleg Cassini pin-stripe jacket; worked on State of Am. Bus. Jacket—is this for wearing?; cut pieces for sample of Hat 4b.
11-13-08
Thursday
Took apart gray pants from H/J. Used some for 3 right gray gloves with gray thread. Nice accident due to inattention since 2 of 3 meant to be left. Cut fourth glove for left.
11-12-08
Wednesday
Finished 2nd long cream glove, with off-colored thumb + a bit of pale pink at end of cuff. u stayed home sick. Worked on website a little.
11-11-08
Tuesday
Worked on 2nd glove. Sewed sample for Hat 4 with navy wool bought in 2001, exterior, + lavender velvet from pants bought in Silverlake, 2002(?) interior. A bit of orange knit (a's Paris t-shirt) for button loops, misc. buttons. (Hat for J, really, will give on trip to Buffalo.)
11-10-08
Monday
Sewed Hat model 3, made from especially poor quality acrylic airplane blanket. Worked on glove (which?)
11-7-08
Friday
Sorted MBR + a's garbage bins, mostly paper; videotaped this process. Needs subtitles to explain sorting categories.
11-5+6-08
Wednesday, Thursday
Made some pieces to make model for a big table. Will have crankable fabric surface, W-shaped legs. Waiting for studio to work this out. Made hat Model 1 using part of globe, red + brown felt, with blue + lt. blue fleece interior. Made 2nd version with 3 different colors from 3 different old t-shirts. Both versions too wide.
11-3-08
Monday
In L's shop. Made cloud jacket with L's pattern, fabric. (Heavenly.)
10-23+24-08
Tuesday
State of Am. Business jacket + shorts. Shorts from Oleg Cassini suit (bought in Saratoga thrift shop, ca. 1996) -- cut off legs, removed waistband + front pleats, re-situated central seam for better fit, lining folded over + visible at waist and leg-openings. Jacket: Christian Dior, made in Malaysia (bought Marin Ave. yard sale ca. 2005). Had removed lining 2007. Turned jacket inside out, removed padding, added a bit of one of A's old shirts, a bit of GK tidy-whitey baby T, a chunk of navy pin-stripe from OC suit. [Jacket & shorts will be worn with a wife-beater found in a curbside garbage bag and shoes made in Italy designed in Oakland company going out of business fall 2008.]
10-15-17-08
10-20-22-08
Worked on a + u's halloween costumes. A form of insanity, clearly. Made all parts of .a.'s invented superhero costume, including gloves + boots that attached to .a.'s crocs.
10-11+12-08
(No work activity recorded, only note to self: make only shelves + containers out of garbage / waste collection. Also, embroider, large, over and over, "I'm in no hurry.")
07-04-08 Worked on sifting table, cleaned up, made new sunhat (ugly but utilitarian), felt anxious.

05-21-08 Laid out, partially cut, many new R/W forms.
05-20-08
